Cllr Harry Barrett has made yet another call on An Taoiseach Enda Kenny to act on the continuing list of business closures being announced in Castlebar.

Labour Party Castlebar town councillor Harry Barrett has this week responded to an article in last week’s edition of the Mayo Advertiser, where Fine Gael councillor Brendan Heneghan accused Cllr Barrett of using negative tactics in the debate about unemployment and job creation in the town.

Fine Gael town councillor and county council candidate Cllr Brendan Henaghan has lashed out at his town council colleague Labour Cllr Harry Barrett for what he says is “continuously using criticism of An Taoiseach to pursue his own political agenda and getting cheap publicity”.

The playground in the new town park in Castlebar will come up for debate at next months meeting of Castlebar Town Council, with councillor Harry Barrett alleging that the playground was not up to standard in providing facilities for wheelchair users. Cllr Barrett said this week that he would be putting forward a motion to the meeting to see the level of wheelchair accessible facilities improved, even though some of his council colleagues and the council management believe the playground conforms to the needs of all users.

This week has seen two Castlebar town councillors exchanging verbal punches over the issue of bringing jobs to the county town. Fianna Fáil councillor Blackie Gavin threw down the challenge to Labour Party councillor Harry Barrett to “get real on who is responsible for solving the jobs crisis in Castlebar”. Cllr Gavin said Cllr Barrett seemed to forget that his own party was part of the Government and could do a lot to solve the problem if it wanted to.

Cllr Harry Barrett this week has welcomed the decision of Castlebar Town Council to press ahead early in the New Year with a Compulsory Purchase Order, (CPO) to acquire a property that is holding up the upgrade of the Newline Junction in Castlebar.

The news that 110 jobs are to be shed by Baxter in Castlebar in the coming months, sent shockwaves through the town when news of the losses emerged late last weekend. The pharmaceutical company which has been in Castlebar since 1972 is one of the major employers in Castlebar and surrounding areas and this news will have come to a shock to hundreds of families in the county. Since the news there have been widespread calls from political and local groups for the Government to ensure that all is done to ensure there are no further job losses from the plant.

“The news this week that a section of the Western Greenway has been closed by a landowner, effectively cutting the successful tourist trail in two, shows once again the need for legislation to provide for walking routes and cycling paths in scenic areas of the country,” said Councillor Harry Barrett.

The announcement this week that 150 new jobs will be created in Castlebar over the next three years will be a major boost for the town and for An Taoiseach Enda Kenny. The Taoiseach has come in for some serious criticism from a number of quarters recently in relation to his delivery of jobs and investment in his home town. The announcement by Northgate Information Solutions that it intends to create these new jobs will be seen as a significant success for Mr Kenny following the criticisms laid at him.
